How to Cleanse your Crystals
Your crystals absorb. That's the whole reason they work, and it's also why they need clearing every now and then. Think of your crystal like a glass that slowly fills up, with your energy, other people's, the weight of whatever you've been moving through. Cleansing empties it out so it can keep doing its job for you.
You'll want to cleanse a piece when it's brand new to you.
And any time it starts to feel a bit heavy or flat in your hand. Beyond that, there's no strict rule, you'll get a feel for it. Here are all the ways to do it, so you can pick whatever suits you.
Water, in the shower
This is my favourite because it asks nothing extra of your day. Wear your piece into the shower and let the water run over it, and as it does, picture what you're washing away. The stagnant energy, other people's moods, the whole weight of the week. You step out cleansed and so does your crystal.
Safe for our stainless steel, gold filled and sterling silver. Keep gold vermeil and any plated pieces dry to be on the safe sid
Salt, the great absorber
Salt draws energy out and holds onto it, which is exactly why we love it. Rest your piece in a small bowl of dry salt overnight, or keep a little dish of salt wherever your jewellery lives so it's quietly clearing all the time. Throw the salt away afterwards, it's done its work and you don't want to reuse it.
Use dry salt rather than salt water. Salt water can dull a crystal’s shine over time and isn't kind to the metals, so keep it dry.
Sun
An hour of morning light will fill a crystal right back up. Sunlight is brilliant for the dark and grounding crystals, and it gives them a real charge.
Best for the dark and opaque ones like black tourmaline, obsidian, carnelian, tiger's eye and jasper. Keep amethyst, rose quartz, citrine and fluorite out of direct sun though, the UV softens their colour over time and you don't want them fading.
Moon
Safe for every single crystal we have, so if you're ever unsure, the moon is always the answer. Leave your piece on a windowsill overnight, and at the full moon especially. Moonlight is less about emptying and more about filling, so it cleanses and charges at the same time. If a piece feels really heavy, cleanse it first with salt or water, then let the moon charge it back up.
Smoke
Pass your piece through incense/smoke for around thirty seconds and let the smoke do the clearing. It's quick, it's gentle & it's safe for absolutely everything, so it's a lovely one to reach for when you want to cleanse a few pieces at once.
Sound
A singing bowl, a bell, a chime, or honestly just your own voice. The vibration moves through the crystal and shakes loose whatever's gone stagnant. The nice thing about sound is you can cleanse your whole collection in one go, no need to do them one at a time.
Earth
For a proper deep reset, give your crystal back to the ground for a day, up to three. This one's for when a piece feels really weighed down and you want to start completely fresh. Keep it somewhere dry and mark the spot so you don't lose it.
And the one that matters most, you
None of this actually works without you. The salt, the smoke, the moon, they're all just vessels for a decision you're making. Cleansing is really you saying I release what isn't mine, and I'm beginning again. Say it out loud if you like. Your intention is the method, everything else is just the ritual around it.
However you choose to do it, cleansing is a lovely little moment to pause and reconnect with your piece. Once it's clear, set your intention again, clasp it back on, and let it get back to work.
